Failover incidents — sound familiar?

  • ▸ Patroni split-brain after etcd partition — Two nodes both thought they were primary for 4 minutes; LSN diverged and you can't cleanly roll either side back.
  • ▸ Synchronous commit hanging — synchronous_standby_names set to ANY 1; under burst load the standby falls behind, commits hang, the app pool exhausts.
  • ▸ Pgpool failing inconsistent health checks — Health-check timeout misaligned with PG statement_timeout; Pgpool marks the primary down during long queries and fails over unnecessarily.

PostgreSQL High Availability Architectures

Choose the right HA architecture pattern based on your application requirements, geographic distribution, and recovery objectives. Our PostgreSQL experts help you select and implement the optimal solution.

Master-Slave with Automatic Failover

Technology Stack

Patroni + etcd + HAProxy

Traditional master-slave architecture with Patroni managing automatic failover through etcd consensus. HAProxy routes connections to separate primary and replica endpoints; the application selects the appropriate endpoint.

RTO target

Measured in drills

RPO target

Depends on replication

Use Case

Read scaling with automatic primary failover

Key Benefits

  • Simple architecture, well-understood patterns
  • Excellent read scaling with multiple replicas
  • Automatic failover tested against agreed recovery objectives
  • Industry-proven reliability

Cross-Region Disaster Recovery

Technology Stack

Asynchronous standby + tested promotion

A separate-region standby can provide a disaster recovery target. Replication lag, source fencing, network routing, and application reconnection need explicit controls. Native logical replication and Pgpool-II alone do not create a conflict-safe multi-writer cluster.

Geographically distributed applications

Key Benefits

  • Separate-region recovery target
  • Explicit primary ownership
  • Low RPO with asynchronous logical replication
  • Rehearsed recovery and reconciliation

Kubernetes-Native HA

Critical PostgreSQL Clustering Failure Modes We Assess

High availability clusters suffer disastrous downtime when etcd consensus is partitioned, synchronous standbys stall, or reconnect storms overwhelm new primary nodes. Our DBREs mitigate these critical breakdown modes:

P1 Critical · Data Divergence

Split-Brain & Asymmetric Network Partitions under etcd DCS Quorum Loss

Transient network partitioning between availability zones isolates the primary Patroni node from the etcd consensus cluster. If watchdog timers or DCS leases are misconfigured, both isolated partitions elect a leader, accepting diverging writes that cause irreversible data corruption.

JusDB Engineering Mitigation:

JusDB provisions odd-numbered multi-AZ etcd quorums (3 or 5 nodes), configures Linux kernel software watchdogs, and implements strict fencing with fencing and failover settings, then test primary ownership during failure drills.

P1 Critical · Transaction Hang

Synchronous Replication Standby Stall & Application Thread Lockup

When synchronous_commit is enabled with synchronous_standby_names, a sudden network spike or storage saturation on the standby node causes the primary to stall all incoming write transactions waiting for WAL flush acknowledgment, crashing application connection pools.

JusDB Engineering Mitigation:

JusDB deploys FIRST 1 (replica1, replica2) multi-standby synchronous quorums with dynamic fallback policies and automated alerting on replication lag.

P2 High · Connection Collapse

Client Reconnect Thundering Herd & Connection Exhaustion on Failover

Following an automated Patroni leader election, hundreds of application microservices concurrently reconnect to the new primary. The sudden thundering herd exhausts max_connections and CPU resources, causing the newly elected primary to crash immediately.

JusDB Engineering Mitigation:

JusDB places clustered PgBouncer instances in front of the database with connection multiplexing, implementing exponential backoff jitter and transaction pooling sized through workload and capacity tests.

Telemetry Runbooks · Non-Blocking High Availability Diagnostics

Our PostgreSQL DBREs execute read-only diagnostic queries to verify replication byte lag and DCS consensus state across all cluster members:

PostgreSQL: Streaming Replication Lag & Sync State
SQL · Replication Health

Measures exact sent, write, flush, and replay byte lag across all connected standby replicas to track RPO targets.

CLI · DCS Topology

PostgreSQL High Availability FAQs

Common questions about PostgreSQL high availability, automatic failover, disaster recovery, and our implementation process.

Do you guarantee an uptime percentage for PostgreSQL HA?
No. Achievable uptime depends on your topology, hosting and workload, so we do not publish a fixed percentage. We design Patroni clusters with automatic failover, redundant infrastructure and continuous monitoring, and document the escalation procedures. Availability and response commitments are defined in your service agreement.
How is automatic failover configured with Patroni?
JusDB reviews Patroni leader-lock timing, standby eligibility, replication lag, primary fencing, and routing health checks. Failover timing depends on those settings and failure conditions; application recovery also includes connection retries. The chosen topology is tested against the agreed recovery objectives. Managed cloud services use their own failover controls.
Which load balancing tools are supported?
HAProxy can route connections to healthy primary or replica endpoints, and PgBouncer pools connections; neither automatically classifies SQL statements for query-level read/write splitting. Application routing or suitable middleware such as pgpool-II requires separate compatibility and consistency checks. Failover coordination and fencing depend on the chosen architecture.
What is the RPO/RTO for disaster recovery?
Recovery point and recovery time objectives are set for each workload. Synchronous replication reduces the risk of losing acknowledged commits but depends on the selected durability settings, standby eligibility, and surviving failure domains; it can delay or block writes. Asynchronous failover can lose recent transactions. Drills measure promotion, connection routing, application reconnect time, and restored data against the agreed criteria.
Can you integrate HA with cloud managed Postgres?
Yes, we integrate with AWS RDS Multi-AZ, Azure Database for PostgreSQL with HA, Google Cloud SQL HA, and hybrid cloud architectures. We optimize cloud-native HA features while maintaining portability and avoiding vendor lock-in. Our solutions work seamlessly across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
How do you handle geographic distribution and multi-region HA?
We implement multi-region HA using cascading replication, logical replication, or BDR (Bi-Directional Replication) depending on your requirements. Our solutions include WAN optimization, conflict resolution strategies, and automated failover across geographic regions to ensure business continuity during regional outages.
What monitoring and alerting capabilities are included?
Our HA solutions include comprehensive monitoring with real-time health checks, performance metrics, replication lag monitoring, and automated alerting. We integrate with popular monitoring platforms like Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, and New Relic to provide visibility into cluster health, failover events, and performance trends.
