Cloud SQL HA configuration — what does production look like?

Standard production setup: HA enabled with primary in zone-A + standby in zone-B within a region, synchronous replication, automatic failover (~60 second RTO typical). Add read replicas (in-region for analytics offload, cross-region for DR + global reads). Configure deletion protection, automated backups with 7-30 day retention, PITR enabled. We design the topology based on workload + RPO/RTO budget — not generic defaults.

Cloud SQL supports IAM database authentication — clients authenticate using Google Cloud IAM tokens instead of passwords. Use cases: (a) eliminate password rotation overhead, (b) leverage existing GCP IAM groups for DB access, (c) audit DB access via Cloud Audit Logs at the IAM level. Limitations: each connection requires a token-fetch round-trip, which adds latency for short-lived connection patterns. For Lambda-equivalent (Cloud Run / Cloud Functions) workloads with persistent connections, IAM auth is excellent. For high-churn connection patterns, password auth + Secret Manager rotation may be simpler.

Database Migration Service (DMS) — what does it handle?

DMS handles: on-prem MySQL → Cloud SQL, EC2 MySQL → Cloud SQL, AWS RDS MySQL → Cloud SQL, MySQL → Cloud SQL within GCP. It uses logical replication for continuous sync between source and destination, enabling near-zero-downtime cutover. The downsides: schema-level migrations need to be done outside DMS, certain MySQL versions or storage engines aren't supported, and cutover requires application-tier endpoint changes. We design the migration with DMS handling the data movement plus application coordination for the cutover window.

AlloyDB vs Cloud SQL — which fits MySQL workloads?

AlloyDB is GCP's Postgres-only managed service — not available for MySQL. For MySQL on GCP, Cloud SQL is the only first-party option. For MySQL workloads needing more performance than Cloud SQL can deliver, the alternatives are: (a) self-managed MySQL on Compute Engine with full operational ownership, (b) migrate to a different engine (Aurora MySQL on AWS, or Postgres on AlloyDB if migration scope is acceptable).

Standard sequence: (1) audit source MySQL version + storage engines + extension dependencies, (2) provision Cloud SQL with matching parameters, (3) configure DMS for continuous replication, (4) wait for initial backfill + ongoing-replication lag to settle, (5) flip reads to Cloud SQL — observe error rate + latency, (6) quiesce writes on source briefly, (7) promote Cloud SQL, (8) cut application endpoints, (9) 24-48 hour soak with source kept replicated as rollback, (10) decommission source.

How do Cloud SQL major-version upgrades and maintenance windows work?

Cloud SQL supports in-place major-version upgrades for MySQL — Google clones the instance, upgrades it, and switches over, with a short connectivity interruption during the cutover (not strictly zero-downtime, but minimised). To shrink the impact further, we stage upgrades on a read replica first, validate application compatibility, and then promote. Routine patching happens inside configurable maintenance windows; we set the day/time window plus maintenance deny-periods around peak traffic, and order updates so the standby/replicas are patched before the primary. There is always a brief failover-style restart during patching, so the goal is near-zero-downtime with a planned, predictable window rather than an unbounded outage.
